Windy Chien’s Artist Workshop
We are delighted to announce our second-year collaboration with Windy Chien, a renowned San Francisco artist and author of “The Year Of Knots”. From November 3rd to 8th, Windy Chien will lead a hands-on workshop for guests at The Inn at Newport Ranch, delving into the ancient art of knot tying. Through teaching, storytelling, and collaborative creation, Windy will unveil the profound beauty and creativity found in the simplicity of knots, inspiring attendees to ignite their own artistic journeys.

In this workshop, up to 18 participants will have the opportunity to learn the art of knot tying from Windy Chien, San Francisco artist and author of The Year of Knots.
Knots are artifacts of human ingenuity: an ancient technology predating the wheel and use of fire. And each is a perfectly designed object. To the intersection of function, mathematics, and history where knots reside, Windy’s practice introduces aesthetics to illuminate what’s most fascinating about them: the journey of the line.
As Windy explains how a line’s journey creates strength and meaning in each knot, she will also detail her own creative journey — starting with the yearlong project carried out in 2016 to learn a new knot each day into an overview of her current body of work.
During the workshop, participants will learn several knotting techniques, then each person will build upon the skills they’ve learned to co-create a large scale group artwork to be installed permanently at the Inn, as well as creative pieces they can take home with them.
Workshop attendees will walk away with knowledge of the history and utility of various knots, new skills, their own art piece, and the story of why it’s never too late to start living a creative life.
Arrival: Please plan to arrive after 3 PM on November 3rd.
Departure: Departure is by noon on November 8th.
Breakfast: Daily at 8:30 AM.
Morning Workshop: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Lunch: Daily at 12:30 PM.
Afternoon Workshop: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Free Time: From 3:30 PM onwards.
Cocktail Gathering: Nightly at 6:00 PM.
Dinner: Nightly at 7:00 PM.
Special Presentation and Community Lecture: One evening will feature a special presentation and community lecture by Windy. Details will be provided upon arrival.
Free Time Morning: One morning will be dedicated to free time for guests to explore the property and the surrounding area. More information will be provided at the workshop.
The cost of the workshop is $1500. Please note that accommodations are not included in this price.
No, accommodations are not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging.
During the free time, you are welcome to explore the property, relax, or participate in any activities available in the surrounding area. Our staff will be happy to provide recommendations.
