Mendocino Coast, CA Dining

Elevated Ranch Dining

On the ranch, there is a noise and rhythm. A bootstrap way of life. Our 2,200 acres of primitive Mendocino forest and ocean bluffs have been unaltered for over 100 years. There are Yuki huts, arrowheads, and pottery on this property, and plants you find nowhere else. There are shifting weather patterns specific to our coastline; fluctuations between fog and sun, shade and light. Nothing is static. Every day, the cows you see out your window are put to different pastures, the horses are corralled, there is feed and tack, shoeing; wood to be split, trees to be downed, wells to be dug. This is a working ranch and we strive to embody that with our cuisine.

Culinary Program

The Inn at Newport Ranch is pleased to announce our new Executive Chef, Nick Wells, who has been working in concert with renowned chef, gatherer and culinary consultant Adam Lawrence. Together, these two culinary innovators are redefining the North Coast dining experience with their creative and fresh perspective.

In 2025 we have spent time to updating our facilities in a manner that aids our aim to create unique and delicious food that reflects a sense of place; the place we call The Newport Ranch. We have built a larder and pantry of ingredients from our diverse ranch, gardens and our abundant surroundings. Executive Chef Nick Wells strives to showcase the biodiversity of the meadows, sea, old growth redwood forest, and the various other habitats in our immediate vicinity by harvesting items at their peak and combining them in a way that evokes and creates lasting memories of “The Ranch.”

Our Gardens

As the days expand, frost gives way to flowers, shoots, leaves, and grasses. And then it goes back to shorter days, root vegetables, harvested honey, and mushrooms. Our menus are a direct expression of that. From our pantry and larder, gardens, trails, forests, and waters we have foraged, farmed, fermented, preserved, and procured the raw materials that are the foods of this moment, at this time, in this place we call “the Ranch.”
